Local Speaker Andy Kyle 8th December 2026
“The View from The Dartmouth Office”
Born in Hampshire, Andy’s interest in photography was encouraged by his stepfather. After leaving school, he worked at the Camberley News before beginning an apprenticeship as a trainee press photographer at the Farnham Herald, then owned by Ray Tindle, who later acquired the Dartmouth Chronicle.
During this period, Andy was named Under 21 Press Photographer of the Year for two consecutive years at the Midland Bank Press Awards.
Following a year at the Reading Evening Post in 1977, Andy moved to London to freelance. A successful “snapper,” he transitioned in his late twenties to a role as a Picture Editor, spending three decades on Fleet Street.
In 2003, Andy and his wife Helen relocated to Dartmouth. By then, he had largely set photography aside. Working as internet-based researchers, they were able to operate from their home in Above Town. However, the view from their office proved too distracting to ignore, and Andy soon picked up his camera again—taking many, many photographs. Thus began The View From The Dartmouth Office.
What started on Andy’s personal Facebook page grew into a dedicated website. Following a conversation with Mark Simpson, publisher of By The Dart, Andy’s photographs began appearing monthly in the magazine, accompanied by his wry commentary.
Andy retired in 2022 after suffering a heart attack during Covid. The website retains its original name, though with no work now done in the office, it might more accurately be called The View From The Dartmouth Study.

The lunch was attended by 37 members and their guests. In spite of the full restaurant conversation wasn’t limited by too much noise.
The chef provided generous quality cuisine.
